A unique 22.5 MW biomass-solar hybrid power plant has begun operations in Les Borges Blanques, Spain. The facility was developed by Abantia and Comse Emte and features a MAN Diesel & Turbo SE turbo generator train.

A biomass-solar hybrid can be a great possible solution to improve efficiency. Abantia and Comsa-Emte have begun building the first worldwide installation that connects the thermal energy with a a unique hybrid plant. This is a solar thermal power facility of 22.5 MW,located in the municipality of Les Borges Blanques (Lleida, Spain), which will be launched inJanuary 2013.

Inauguration

The act of laying the first stone was chaired by the President of the Generalitat, Artur Mas,last March 19th. He was accompanied by the Minister of Enterprise and Employment,Francesc Xavier Mena, and the Territorial Delegate of the Government of the Generalitat deLleida, Ramon Farré. By Abantia attended Abantia group’s president, Francisco Boada.

This biomass-solar hybrid system of the future plant will allow better use of the facility, since the capture of sunlight during daylight hours, using parabolic trough collector technology (a device that is guided by the movement of the sun), is complemented at night with the operation of thebiomass.

Its main fuel is forest biomassenergy crop and agricultural residues. Installation will generate an annual electrical output of 98,000 megawatt-hour (MWh),equivalent to the average consumption of more than 27000 homes. The production of suchclean energy will save 24,500 tons of CO2 dioxide annually.
