Biomass used for power to promote a new bioeconomy. The port of Ghent in Belgium will see Abengoa to develop the largest biomass power plant (215MW) in the world.

  • The plant will produce 215 MW of electricity and heat from sustainable biomass
  • The amount of the project will exceed 315 million euro

Ghent has been debating on energy issues this year and face an uncertain scenarios for upcoming years.

November 5, 2014- Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected by the electricity and gas company, Belgian Eco Energy (Bee), to develop the largest commercial plant in the world of new construction in Ghent (Belgium), which will produce 215 MW of electricity, being one hundred percent of the raw material biomass (wood chips and agro-residues). The amount of the project will exceed 315 million euro.

Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, design and construction of the plant. The project is expected to create up to 1,100 jobs during the execution phase.

The plant of Abengoa in Ghent will use as raw material wood chips and agro-residues. Through the technology of “Circulated Fluidized Bed” the biomass is transformed into high pressure steam, which subsequently passes through a steam turbine to produce electricity.

Requiring no support fossil fuels, the plant will generate 215 MW of clean energy, free from carbon dioxide, which will be used for the power supply industry. And thanks to a system called “district heating” approximately 100 MW of thermal energy will be distributed to supply heating to industries and households in the city of Ghent.

With the development of this new plant, Abengoa will support Belgium being closer to achieve the environmental objectives set by the European Union. Abengoa has biomass plants in Europe, Latin America and the United States that meet the criteria of responsibility, energy efficiency and provide large economic and social benefits in the communities in which they are installed.

Bee Power Gent is one of the three plants that will still benefit from the green certificates for electricity production on the basis of biomass, which the government of Flanders has recently abolished for new projects. The other two are renovated coal plants belonging to Electrabel and E.ON, which will both work on the basis of classic wood pellets. The Bee Power Gent plant will function on another type of fuel, such as plantation wood and wood waste.

According to Engineeringnet.be, Bee Power Gent emphasises the environment-friendliness of the project. The founders say the plant will be established in an industrial area with relatively little habitation, the biomass fuel will be supplied via ships and the plant will emit clean air.

Bee Power Gent should become operational at the end of 2017.
